How the square count is calculated

Quilters cut squares from cross-grain strips: a strip as tall as your square, cut across the 42 usable inches of the fabric. The calculator works out how many squares fit in one strip, how many full strips your yardage yields, and multiplies, no partial strips, because that's how rotary cutting actually goes.

Every pair of squares sewn corner-to-corner and cut apart gives two half-square triangles, so the HST estimate is simply double the square count.
