How border yardage is calculated

Borders are applied from the inside out, and each one makes the quilt bigger before the next is cut, which is exactly where hand math usually goes wrong. The calculator grows the quilt after each border and cuts cross-grain strips from 42" fabric for the sides first, then the top and bottom.

Each border is rounded up to a shop-cuttable eighth of a yard separately, because in practice you buy each border fabric on its own bolt.
