Quilt binding calculator
Strips and yardage for double-fold binding.
2.5" is the everyday choice; 2.25" for a tighter finish.
½ yd
7 WOF strips, about 270" of binding including slack for joins and corners.
How binding yardage is calculated
Binding needs to travel the whole perimeter of the quilt, plus roughly ten extra inches for diagonal seams between strips and for turning the corners. The calculator divides that total length by the usable width of your fabric to get whole strips, then converts strip count times strip width into yardage.
The result is rounded up to the nearest eighth of a yard, the smallest cut most shops will make, so the number you see is the number you can actually ask for at the counter.
